Amit “Tim” Rangi, General Manager at Sofitel Riyadh Hotel & Convention Centre
I often describe myself as an accidental hotelier. After completing my bachelor’s degree in India, I was preparing to pursue a master’s degree in Australia when I came across a newspaper advertisement from a luxury hotel company seeking fresh graduates for its Management Training Program. I decided to apply, never imagining that this single decision would completely transform the course of my career.
Out of hundreds of thousands of applicants, I was fortunate to be selected as one of the top 30 management trainees. That opportunity laid the foundation for what has become a rewarding 23-year career in hospitality. Since then, I have had the privilege of working across six countries on three continents, gaining invaluable experience while learning from diverse cultures, talented teams, and guests from around the world.
What continues to inspire me most about this industry is its fundamental purpose—people taking care of people. Genuine care, authentic hospitality, and the opportunity to create memorable experiences remain at the heart of everything I do. Hospitality is more than a profession; it is a meaningful way of connecting with people and making a positive impact on their lives.
Experiences That Shaped a Hospitality Leader
My career has been defined by the opportunity to live and work across diverse cultures and dynamic markets. I began my professional journey in India before moving to the United States, followed by leadership roles in Angola and Zambia, and later returning to the U.S. Today, I continue this exciting journey across Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Every country and every role has contributed valuable lessons that have shaped both my professional capabilities and personal growth.
One of the most defining chapters of my career was working in New York City. Its fast-paced environment, highly diverse guest profile, multicultural workforce, and competitive business landscape challenged me to think strategically while remaining deeply guest-focused. It taught me the importance of making timely decisions, adapting to constant change, and leading high-performing teams in one of the world’s most demanding hospitality markets.
Equally influential were my experiences in Africa and the Middle East, where I learned the importance of resilience, cultural intelligence, and empathetic leadership. These experiences shaped my leadership philosophy, enabling me to become a more adaptable, inclusive, and commercially driven General Manager. While every market presents unique challenges, exceptional hospitality is always built on the same foundation—people, trust, and genuine service.
The Opportunity Behind Sofitel Riyadh
What attracted me most was the opportunity to be part of a new market, embrace another exciting challenge, and lead the opening of a remarkable hotel. More importantly, it was the chance to contribute to the extraordinary transformation taking place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Driven by Vision 2030, the country’s hospitality industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and I wanted to be part of this inspiring journey.
The opportunity became even more meaningful because Sofitel Riyadh Hotel & Convention Centre was a pre-opening project. There is something incredibly rewarding about building a hotel from the ground up—recruiting and developing talented people, establishing a strong culture, designing operational standards, and preparing every detail before welcoming the very first guest. Watching that vision become reality is one of hospitality’s greatest achievements.
What truly distinguishes Sofitel Riyadh Hotel & Convention Centre is its exceptional Convention Centre. The hotel features a 4,000-square-metre pillarless ballroom capable of accommodating up to 4,000 guests under one roof, making it the largest luxury hotel ballroom of its kind in Saudi Arabia. Combined with Sofitel’s signature blend of French elegance and authentic local culture, it positions the property as a premier destination for international conventions, exhibitions, luxury weddings, and world-class events.
A Vision for Luxury Hospitality Excellence
My vision is to position Sofitel Riyadh Hotel & Convention Centre as the Kingdom’s leading destination for luxury hospitality, meetings, and events. As Saudi Arabia continues its remarkable transformation under Vision 2030, our ambition is to become the preferred venue for international conferences, corporate gatherings, prestigious exhibitions, and exceptional social celebrations.
Beyond our outstanding facilities, our vision is to deliver unforgettable experiences by blending Sofitel’s renowned French art de vivre with authentic Saudi hospitality. Together, these strengths will establish Sofitel Riyadh as one of the Kingdom’s most iconic luxury destinations.
Leading with Empathy and Purpose
I firmly believe hospitality is, above all, a people business. My leadership philosophy begins with genuine care—for both our internal guests, whom we proudly call Heartists, and our valued external guests. When you genuinely care for your team, they naturally extend that same care to every guest, ultimately driving sustainable commercial success.
Trust, empathy, and accountability form the foundation of my leadership style. I strive to create an environment where every team member feels respected, empowered, and inspired to contribute. When people feel ownership and work toward a shared purpose, they consistently deliver exceptional experiences. My role is to inspire, support, and enable our people to succeed together.
Delivering Exceptional Guest Experiences
Delivering exceptional guest experiences while maintaining operational excellence is a continuous balancing act. There is no universal formula, as guest expectations continue to evolve. Therefore, our approach must remain flexible, innovative, and responsive.
For me, success depends on two essential elements: people and processes. We invest heavily in developing our teams and empower them to make decisions that enhance the guest experience while implementing efficient processes that ensure consistency and operational excellence.
Equally important is listening to feedback. By continuously measuring guest satisfaction and operational performance, we refine our strategies, adapt quickly, and consistently deliver memorable experiences.
Empowering Teams for Success
People perform at their best when they feel valued, trusted, and connected to a meaningful purpose. My responsibility is to foster an environment where every team member feels respected, supported, and empowered to make decisions that positively impact our guests.
I encourage open communication, continuous coaching, and recognition of achievements—both large and small. By promoting ownership and creating opportunities for professional growth, our people become more engaged, confident, and committed to delivering excellence every day.
Leading Under Pressure
Preparation is the key to effective leadership under pressure. We focus on proactive planning, ensuring we have the right people, clear processes, and strong communication across every department.
During challenging situations, I remain calm, visible, and fully engaged with the team, helping them make informed decisions quickly. When everyone shares the same commitment to guest satisfaction, operational excellence naturally follows.
Innovation Driving Guest Satisfaction
Innovation plays a vital role in understanding and exceeding today’s evolving guest expectations. For us, innovation means finding smarter ways to personalize experiences, improve efficiency, and create meaningful moments.
By combining advanced technology, creativity, and genuine hospitality, we continue enhancing the guest journey while preserving the human connection that defines true luxury hospitality.
Blending French Elegance with Saudi Hospitality
The essence of Sofitel Riyadh lies in seamlessly blending authentic Saudi hospitality with the timeless French art de vivre throughout every guest touchpoint. From welcoming guests with traditional Saudi Kahwa to showcasing French-inspired cuisine, design, art, and cultural experiences, every element reflects the harmony of these two rich traditions.
Our signature fragrance, Haute Croissanterie, carefully curated artwork, elegant interiors, and distinctive uniforms all contribute to creating a unique sense of place. Our goal is to offer guests an experience that feels authentically Riyadh while embracing the elegance, sophistication, and refinement synonymous with Sofitel.
Strengthening the Sofitel Brand Experience
Sustainability is far more than a performance indicator—it is embedded within the DNA of our operations. As one of Sofitel’s defining brand pillars, Committed Luxury reflects our dedication to delivering exceptional guest experiences while caring responsibly for our environment and communities.
We focus on measurable initiatives including waste reduction, water conservation, energy optimization through smart technologies, and minimizing paper consumption through digital transformation. Our commitment ensures that luxury and sustainability go hand in hand, creating lasting value for our guests, colleagues, and future generations.
Technology Transforming Modern Hospitality
Technology enables us to create more personalized, seamless, and memorable guest experiences. As part of the Sofitel brand and the Accor ecosystem, we leverage technology across every stage of the guest journey to better understand and anticipate individual preferences.
Through the Accor Live Limitless (ALL) loyalty programme and our global guest preference database, we recognize returning guests, personalize their stays, and create meaningful moments throughout their journey. While technology enhances efficiency and convenience, genuine human connection remains at the heart of luxury hospitality.
The Future of Hospitality in Saudi Arabia
The future of hospitality in Riyadh will be shaped by personalization, experiential travel, sustainability, advanced technology, and authentic human connections. With Vision 2030, the Kingdom is rapidly establishing itself as a global destination for business, leisure, and world-class events, including Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034. Major developments such as King Salman International Airport and the launch of Riyadh Air will further strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position on the global tourism stage.
Equally important is the development of Saudi talent, empowering local professionals to lead the industry’s future. While innovation and technology will continue transforming guest experiences, genuine hospitality and meaningful human connections will remain the true differentiators.
Words of Wisdom for Future Leaders
Stay curious, embrace every opportunity to learn, and always remember that hospitality is fundamentally a people business. Build strong foundations, seek diverse experiences, and never underestimate the value of understanding every aspect of hotel operations.
Leadership is not defined by a title—it is demonstrated through service, trust, and the ability to inspire others. Remain authentic, stay humble, and lead with passion, empathy, and genuine care. When you take care of your people, they will take care of your guests—and success will naturally follow.
